Know Thy-Self Know Thy-Self Sophomore Year
All kids have one dream in common, growing up to be allowed to have greater opportunities and to become what is known as an adult. What we all never knew were the responsibilities we’d encounter and true experiences of daily reality. As the oldest sibling in my house hold, I've been taught to take on what is expected of me as a granddaughter, daughter, sister, and a friend, but for the past few years, I feel as though I was given greater responsibility than I expected of receiving. It wasn't something given, but something I've learned to take over because of the new adult reality I've grew up into.
For this year’s Voices of Young Digital Collage project, I was inspired by the artist Barbra Krueger and her digital collage pieces. One that really caught my attention was, “Your Body is a Battleground”. Therefore, I decided to represent a piece similar to that of hers. While the artist divided her model in half to represent the two sides that woman could represent, I divided myself in half, but placed each of my halves to a half of each of my parents. In this piece instead of representing the struggles that woman are put through, I wanted to represent how some children take over the responsibilities of their parents. Hence, my half was made to look like an older version of me while the photos of my parents were of when they were in grade school.
I've experienced many situations where I had to step up my game in order to understand my parents’ perspectives. In a marriage, sometimes the bond is held tight and sometimes the bond could eventually become loose. Arguments between couples could erupt, misunderstandings could commence, and I believe throughout all the struggles, children are the bond and bridge between parents. Since the bonds of children are the closest in relationship to parents, their support and communication highly probable could aid in the re-connection of the bond between parents.
To get the message across, I placed myself in the center of my parents because through situations, children are always the ones stuck in the middle. Sometimes it’s hard to take on the responsibility and as a teen we tend to have only one opinion, our opinion. I’m a junior at Ronald Reagan high school, and by learning the terminology of being open-minded, I’ve learned to give others, especially my parents, the benefit of the doubt because I realized I could really miss out on a great person or on a great opportunity.
The saying “Unwritten Law” was a song title by Cailin released in 1998. This song can relate to how teens feel about their presences in the world and question why they have to experience such struggle when they see other’s with their fantasy lifestyle. I decided to add the title to my piece because of the simplicity of the meaning and for the fact that it’s not a law for children to take over when parents need it most. As I’ve learned throughout the past few years, like Children need support from parents, parents also need the same moral support from their children.
